| Comments: | Bluefin Tuna is a very important part of the commercial longline fishery. The heaviest recorded individual, caught off Nova Scotia in 1979, weighed in a 1,496 lb (680 kg). Until recently, this species was formerly considered to have a worldwide distribution; recent studies have shown the Atlantic and Pacific populations to be taxonomically distinct, at the latter is now considered a separate species, Pacific Bluefin Tuna (T. orientalis). Although the two species are very similar in appearance, individuals from the eastern Pacific apparently reach a smaller maximum size; the largest on record was 6' 2" (1.9 m) long and weighed 297 lb (135 kg), but most weigh 10-44 lb (4.5-20 kg). |
