| Comments: | This colorful species is the old tilefish with a prominent triangular crest on teh top of the head. It is best-known and most commercially utilized species in the family. There are unconfirmed reports of individuals weighing up to 50 lb (23 kg). Tilefish apparently occupies an unusually narrow temperature range, probably 47 - 53 F (8.25 - 11.65 C). A mass die-off occurred in 1892, after which the fish was rare for decades; this is believed to have been the result of freak conditions that temporarily eliminated water in the required temperature range. |
