| Comments: | A sea-run Rainbow Trout, often called Steelhead by anglers, usually spends two to four years in its home stream before venturing to sea, where it remains for about three years; it returns to the home stream in the winter to spawn, and will continue this pattern as long as it survives natural predators. Fish that exist solely in fresh water spawn in the spring. Most males spawn at one year of age, while females may take six years to mature. Rainbow Trout is a popular sport fish; it is rarely taken at sea by anglers using bait, but does succumb readily to trolled shrimp-like flies. It provides good eating and is raised for market through aquaculture. |
